Depending on your mental health diagnosis, you may show reduced activity in other regions of the brain that TMS therapy can also help reawaken.
We offer a variety of different types of TMS therapy to our patients. We are big fans of theta burst stimulation, also called Express TMS, which more accurately mimics the brain’s universal signal to engage and increase neuroplasticity or learning in around 3 minutes.
What should I expect during TMS Therapy?
TMS therapy is non-surgical and does not require anesthesia sedation. During your session, you sit in a comfortable chair with the TMS equipment positioned at a specific point on your head. Most patients report a light tapping sensation on their forehead, but it is not painful. We are with you during every single treatment session and are always available should you have any questions or concerns.
To make sure TMS therapy is right for you, you can set up an initial consultation with a member of our medical team. We will create a treatment plan based on your specific needs, which may change on a weekly—or even daily—basis as symptoms improve.
TMS doesn’t cause any disruptive side effects. Some patients report temporary, mild headaches after their sessions. However, you can drive yourself to and from your appointments and won’t need to take any time off from school or work. Other patients may experience mild facial movement during the stimulation, which ceases immediately once the treatment is over.
It used to be thought that TMS would cause an increased risk of seizure, but newer research has shown that, as long as TMS is done correctly by adequately trained staff, the risk of seizure is the same as any other antidepressant medication—1 in 80,000. However, other providers do use certain machines that may increase the seizure risk substantially. TMS therapy is an extremely effective treatment for mood disorders. The trajectory of improvements varies, where about 10-20% of people notice significant improvements in mood within the first week. The majority of people tend to notice that their symptoms slowly lessen as they continue with the TMS course, and about 10% are “late responders,” who don’t notice any improvements until the very end of treatment. Typically, late responders tend to continue to notice improvements for weeks after they’ve stopped TMS completely.
